Fake news is unavoidable, but if you care about reading truthful stories, you need to be on high alert.
Facebook, a primary driver of traffic to publications, came under fire years ago for allowing the promotion of fake news sites with conspiracy theories rather than facts. Fake news sites are out there, and someone on your Facebook friend's list is probably sharing one of their stories right now.
Of course, 'real news' media outlets and journalists sometimes make mistakes. And when we do, we issue corrections and take responsibility for those mistakes. Fake news sites make no such efforts toward accuracy and often invent entirely fictional stories, which is what puts them in a different category. Further, some fake news sites mostly publish-factual news but mix in some fake stories. The Internet has become the lawless source of fake news false claims, outright lies and half-truths. How do we navigate through all the claims on the Internet?
Next time you see a headline, check if it's from one of the popular fake news websites. Here are some helpful tips on how to approach any news article.
First, ask yourself such questions as Who has written the news article? Are they a reputable or reliable source? Is this written by a real person with a long history commenting on diverse topics or a fictitious-person created by an internet troll who targets conspiracy theories over and over and over? Where has the article been published? Can I find the same information from another source, a more reliable one?
Then, examine claims found in YouTube videos and social media posts. Think twice before you like or share an article on social media. Be Web Liberate - Fact check everything.
