Language is an integral part of our daily lives, no matter where we live. Similarly, music plays a significant role in many people's lives, whether they listen to the radio on their commute or play in an orchestra. Both language and music are deeply embedded in our culture, and here are some of the key similarities between them.

Both language and music have a writing system. In English, we record language using letters, while music is recorded with notes. Just as you are reading this collection of letters and deriving meaning from it, musicians read notes and create meaning through music. By writing language or music, we can share experiences across time.

Both vary with culture. You can often tell where someone is from by the language they speak. Similarly, different styles of music around the world reflect diverse cultures, giving us the opportunity to explore a wide range of traditions and providing music for every occasion.

Both convey emotion. While you might see my feelings in my facial expressions, you can certainly hear them in my words. Likewise, music can communicate the emotions of the composer and allow us to share those feelings. When you're happy, you might want to sing and dance to an upbeat song to celebrate. In contrast, when you're feeling down, you may listen to sad music to process your emotions. We have all used music to express or manage our feelings, often combining it with language through song lyrics.
