The Earth
Earth, our home planet, is the third planet from the Sun and ranks as the fifth largest in the solar system. It is the only known place that supports life. The name “Earth” has been used for over one thousand years. Unlike the other planets, which were named after Greek and Roman deities, Earth’s name comes from Old English and Germanic, meaning “the ground”. As Earth orbits the Sun, it rotates once every 23.9 hours and takes 365.25 days to complete a full orbit. The extra quarter of a day creates a challenge for our calendar, which counts a year as 365 days. To stay aligned with Earth’s orbit, we add an extra day every four years, known as a leap day, to a leap year. The hospitable environment of Earth, along with its abundant chemical composition, has enabled life to flourish. Uniquely, much of the planet maintains a hospitable temperature, allowing liquid water to exist for long periods. Its vast oceans have created an ideal and convenient environment for life to emerge around 3.8 billion years ago.

A. second B. third C. fourth D. fifth
2. What language does the name of Earth come from?
