Reach for the Remote Control
Even before 1903, when the Wright Brothers' dream of human flight had finally come true, remote-controlled aircraft were being tested. In the 19th century, remote-controlled airships that used radio signals were flown in theater acts. And in 1883, the first photo from the sky was taken using a kite, a camera, and a very long piece of string. By World War I, large, remote-controlled aircraft were being developed. The age of drones had begun. Today, these machines with no pilots are becoming more and more popular.
Drones come in many sizes. There are large vehicles that can carry passengers. These may one day replace traditional passenger airplanes. Many people are nervous about the idea of a plane without a human pilot, but planes that carry small groups are already being developed. And there are already subways without drivers in many cities around the world.
