The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is the biggest tropical rainforest in the world. It covers about 40 percent of South America. This rainforest is very important because it has many kinds of plants and animals. People call it "the lungs of the earth" because it helps produce the oxygen we breathe.

Even though the rainforest is helpful to us, humans have already cut down about 12 percent of the trees. This has changed the weather and the amount of rain in the area, which also affects the animals, plants, and even people who live there.

If we don't do something to stop this, scientists say that 30 to 60 percent of the Amazon Rainforest could turn into a dry area with few trees.
